HC Deb 09 March 1949 vol 462 c118W
38. Mr. Pritt

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether his attention has been drawn to the Pensions (Amendment) Bill No.V. of 1949 (Mauritius), which allows women to remain in Government service after marriage except in the case of telephonists who are to be obliged to retire; and whether he will take steps to secure that telephonists are also included in the Bill.

Mr. Creech Jones

I have seen this Bill. The authorities in Mauritius consider that the employment of women as telephonists after marriage is undesirable having regard to the social conditions in the Colony. I do not think that I should be justified in intervening with the discretion of the Mauritius Legislature in this matter.
