§ 29. Brigadier Medlicottasked the Secretary of State for War what proportion of the total number of soldiers believed to be entitled to medals for the late war have so far sent in their claims.
§ Mr. ShinwellI assume that the hon. and gallant Member is referring to all who have served in the Army during the late war, whether or not they are still serving. Available statistics do not show how many of these officers and other ranks are entitled to medals and campaign stars. The greatest number of male officers and men serving in the Army at any one time during the war was approximately 2,931,000, and of women officers and other ranks 223,000, making a total of 3,154,000. Applications for medals and campaign stars have been received from or on behalf of approximately 1,200,000 officers and other ranks.
