Graham-Littleasked the Minister of Food whether he is aware that the use of agene for bleaching flour provided for human consumption has been prohibited in the U.S.A. in accordance with the advice tendered by the Food and Drug administration; and what steps he is taking to prevent the use of agene in this country.
§ Mr. StracheyI am aware that the use of nitrogen trichloride is to be discontinued in the U.S.A. on 1st August next. As I informed the House on 13th December a small scientific committee under the chairmanship of Sir Wilson Jameson,60W Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health, has been set up and is at present reviewing the results of experimental work on flour improvers now in progress in the United Kingdom and the data submitted in evidence at Washington.
