§ Mr. Stokesasked the Secretary of State for War how many prisoners of war were returned to Germany from the Middle East for each of the months August and September; and how many remain to be returned on 1st October, 1948.
§ Mr. ShinwellApproximately 9,500 prisoners of war were repatriated from the Middle East during August. It is estimated that some further 10,500 will have been repatriated by the end of September, which will complete general repatriation. There will remain in the Middle East approximately 1,500, of whom the majority have been given civilian status; the rest are either escapers, or have voluntarily deferred their repatriation.
