HC Deb 21 September 1948 vol 456 c81W
126. Mr. Byers

asked the Minister of Education the amount of money which is provided by His Majesty's Government for the furtherance of athletics in this country; and whether it is possible to make a substantial increase in this amount in the near future.

Mr. Tomlinson

The sum included in the current Vote of my Department for development of sports and games and allied activities under the Physical Training and Recreation Act, 1937, is £350,000, as compared with £150,000 in last year's Vote. In addition there is provision of £316,000 for direct grants in aid of Youth Service, as compared with £240,000 last year. On my present information I am satisfied that this provision, together with that made by local education authorities, is enough to meet reasonable requirements.
