HC Deb 02 November 1948 vol 457 c63W
Sir E. Graham-Little

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that many young consultants, as in an example submitted to him, are undergoing severe financial privation owing to the delay in the payment of their remuneration for three months, during which time they have had to pay interest on overdrafts at their banks; and whether he will take measures to prevent repetition of this delay.

Mr. Bevan

Certain regional hospital boards (as in the case referred to by the hon. Member) were unable, owing to initial staffing difficulties immediately after the appointed day, to pay specialists before the end of September. I see no reason why this difficulty should continue: the Board concerned in the case referred to are now paying monthly or quarterly at the wish of the specialist.
