HC Deb 02 November 1948 vol 457 cc61-2W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Postmaster-General if he will give an estimate of the cost of postage involved in correspondence to and from the Ministry of National Insurance which now passes free on His Majesty's Service if the cost were paid in postage stamps in the ordinary way.

Mr. Wilfred Paling

The cost of postage at ordinary rates on the correspondence referred to for the period 5th of July to 30th of September, 1948, is estimated at £500,000. In accordance with the normal practice, the actual cost of handling the correspondence chargeable to the National Insurance and Industrial Injuries Funds will be recoverable in cash and the cost of handling the remainder of the correspondence will be regarded as a service rendered without charge.
