HL Deb 01 June 1948 vol 156 c76WA
LORD DOWDING

asked His Majesty's Government, what steps they are taking at the present time to secure more humane methods of slaughter of animals in Government slaughterhouses?

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES (THE EARL OF HUNTINGDON)

The Minister of Food issued instructions on March 13, 1948, that in all Government slaughterhouses all cattle, calves, sheep and pigs, except those killed by Jewish and Mohammedan methods, must be stunned before being killed. Sheep are included, although the provisions of the Slaughter of Animals Act, 1933, relating particularly to sheep may not have been applied by resolution of the local authority.

House adjourned at six o'clock.
