HL Deb 14 July 1948 vol 157 cc865-6WA
EARL FORTESCUE

asked His Majesty's Government whether there is any reason, legal or otherwise, why grids should not be installed on roads in the moorland areas of Devon and Cornwall.

THE EARL OF LISTOWEL

The Minister of Transport is advised that there is no provision in the general law empowering highway authorities to construct and maintain cattle grids in public roads. One county council in England has sought such power by a private Bill promoted this Session, and the Minister intends to ask Parliament to confer the power on highway authorities generally, when a suitable opportunity for the amendment of highway law presents itself.
