§ 20. Major Beamishasked the Secretary of State for War what steps he is taking to alleviate the financial difficulties of British troops in Austria; and whether he is satisfied that the pay is sufficient to enable all ranks to buy necessaries of life in local currency, when they are unable to obtain sufficient of such necessaries through their units or from N.A.A.F.I. and welfare sources.
§ Mr. ShinwellIn stations where necessary expenditure is shown to exceed corresponding expenditure at home, a local overseas allowance is granted. Recent discussions with the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief have established that taking all considerations into account, including the availability of supplies from N.A.A.F.I., there is not at present a case for the issue of such an allowance in Austria.
