Friend is referring to the use made of the facilities administered by the Export Credits Guarantee Department, the amount of export business on which guarantees have been given during the year 1947–48 was £186 million and for the first half of the current financial year, £133 million. Claims paid as a result of the war and subsequently, total to over £5½ million of which about £2frac14; million has since been recovered.
