Mr. Palmer

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the number of children born in His Majesty's prisons during the last five years; and the average figures of maternal and infant mortality for such births.

During the five years ended 3rst December, 1947, 351 live births occurred in His Majesty's prisons and Borstal Institutions in England and Wales. None of the mothers, but nine of the infants, died. There were 17 still births.
