asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what the position is with regard to the payment of com- 12W pensation by the Chinese Government for damage done to British property during the course of the riots in Canton on 16th January; and whether any compensation has so far been paid.

Despite repeated representations by His Majesty's Embassy at Nanking, no progress at all has been made, and the position remains as stated in the answer given to the hon. Member for Brighton (Mr. Teeling) on 16th February. No compensation has yet been paid.
