Mr. Charles Smithasked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware of the anxiety felt at the failure to clear anti-invasion obstructions from the Rivers Blackwater and Colne; whether he has considered correspondence from the Colchester Borough Council and the West Mersey Urban District Council forwarded to him by the hon. Member for Colchester giving evidence of loss of life due to this failure; when the Colchester Borough Council may expect to receive a reply from the Admiralty to their letter of 29th August on this subject; and what steps it is proposed to take.
§ Mr. M. StewartThe clearance of anti-invasion obstacles from this area has been referred to the Regional Committee set up by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Works; whether or not clearance is in the public interest will be decided by that committee. The correspondence mentioned in the Question has now been referred to my Department, who are considering it.
