HC Deb 27 November 1947 vol 444 c305W
47. Mr. Hollis

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that on 20th October, Mr. John A. Hannington, of Caroline Buildings, Bath, was directed to work as a carpenter at Messrs. Wilson Lovatt and Sons, of Tiverton, without being offered any alternative employment; and whether he will see to it that such offer of alternative employment is made to him.

Mr. Isaacs

I very much regret that a direction to employment—at Twerton, near Bath and not to Tiverton as stated—should have been issued to Mr. Harrington. While the action taken prevented a serious delay on the work of an important housing contract the issue of the direction was not justified under my policy and I am arranging for it to be withdrawn and for Mr. Harrington to be given a reasonable choice of jobs on essential work.
