HC Deb 24 November 1947 vol 444 cc250-1W
100. Mr. W. Fletcher

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that during the months of May and June, 1947, of the 90,562 tons of commodities and general cargo shipped from Singapore and Malaya to America and Canada, 60,571 tons were carried in American bottoms and only 14,475 tons in British; and what steps he is taking to remedy this disproportion which results in a serious loss of dollar earnings.

Mr. Callaghan

British shipping companies, with the support of my Department are making every effort to restore their share in dollar-earning trades in fair competition with other flags, but for the time being our shipping resources are not sufficient to cover all our needs.
