HC Deb 11 November 1947 vol 444 c45W
66. Sir G. Jeffreys

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether, in view of the difficulty experienced by ex-officers in the higher age groups in finding suitable employment, he will take steps to open up suitable Civil Service vacancies for such ex-officers, and for this purpose to extend the existing age limits.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

The arrangements for recruitment to established posts during the reconstruction period guarantee a generous proportion to ex-Service men; they are designed to restore opportunities of competing for the established Civil Service to those who lost them during the recent war and for that purpose the normal age limits have been raised by the length of the war period. As to the filling of vacancies of a temporary character, Departments select those most suitable from those submitted to them by the Ministry of Labour and give due consideration to ex-Service men thus submitted; there is no age-limit set to the recruitment of temporary Government staffs.
