asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the overseas cost of the British Council.

Mr. Mayhew

During 1946–47, the last full year for which figures are available, the overseas expenditure of the British Council amounted to £1,257,554 out of a total expenditure of approximately £2,880,300. During the first six months of the current financial year overseas expenditure amounted to £728,285, the total estimated expenditure for the whole year being £3,500,000.
