HC Deb 04 November 1947 vol 443 cc186-7W
99. Mr. Carmichael

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the total number of Glasgow children calculated as necessary for the 1947 potato harvest; the number actually engaged in the work; and the number and percentage of possible pupils from each of the fee-paying and secondary schools.

Mr. Woodburn

The number of Glasgow children required for the 1947 potato harvest was originally estimated at 2,000, but suitable accommodation was available for 1,700 only. One thousand six hundred and seventeen actually took part in the work. As regards the last part of the Question, the information is not readily available, but the total number of children from Glasgow who volunteered was 6,000 out of a possible number of approximately 31,000.
