HC Deb 03 November 1947 vol 443 c139W
21. Mr. Murray

asked the Minister of Food if he is aware that fish and chip shops in the Spennymoor Division are open only two or three times a week, because of the shortage of fish; what is the cause of such shortage; and what prospect there is of improvement of deliveries at an early date.

Dr. Summerskill

Landings always fall at this time of the year and the present demand for fish is so heavy that many traders, including the friers in the Spennymoor Division, cannot get all they need. There may be some improvement there in a few weeks' time when landings of Norwegian cod at North Shields usually start.
