HC Deb 21 March 1947 vol 435 c123W
Profesor Gruffydd

asked the Minister of Education the number of teachers in elementary and secondary schools, respectively, in 1938, 1945, 1946 and 1947; and give an estimate of those available in 1948.

Mr. Tomlinson

In. view of the reclassification of schools under the Education Act, 1944, it would be misleading to give separate figures for primary and secondary schools. The following table, however, shows the total number of teachers in public elementary schools and in grant aided (other than direct grant) secondary schools for 1938 and in maintained and assisted primary and secondary schools for 1945 and subsequent years:

1938 186,932
October, 1945 173,501
January, 1946 176,003
January, 1947 188,399
April, 1948 193,000
(estimated)
