HC Deb 12 March 1947 vol 434 cc195-6W
87. Mr. H. Wallace

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General whether he can now say when the work relevant to the extension and improvement of the telephone service in Walthamstow, London, E.17, will be completed; and the number of applicants who will secure telephones by the end of this year and the number of applicants registered up to the end of 1946 who will not secure telephones.

Mr. Burke

The Borough of Waltham-stow is served by two exchanges, at each of which the exchange equipment and underground cables are already heavily loaded. Additional equipment is now being installed, and will begin to become available by mid-summer. The provision of additional cables will, however, take longer, and although this work is being pressed forward it is unlikely that service will be provided during the current year for more than about 1,200 of the 2,100 applications recorded before the 31st December, 1946.
