HC Deb 12 March 1947 vol 434 c187W
57. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Minister of Food whether, in view of the shortage and high price of olive oil, he will take steps to increase the supply of cocoanut, linseed, sunflower seed and other vegetable oils to meet the demand for medicinal and domestic purposes.

Dr. Edith Summerskill

Arrangements are being made to increase the amount of olive oil allocated for sale on medical certificates. In addition the Ministry will still be prepared to supply groundnut oil on application as an alternative to olive oil where this is recommended by the doctor. I regret that our supply of the vegetable oils mentioned is not sufficient to permit of any general distribution of them. We shall, however, arrange for the distribution of olive oil for domestic purposes as soon as it is possible to import a sufficient supply for this purpose.
