32. Dr. Jegerasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will give the latest available figures of unemployment in Trinidad and the other West Indian Colonies.
Mr. Creech JonesI regret that it is not possible to give accurate figures of unemployment, which would in any case be misleading, since in West Indian conditions the main problem is one of underemployment or partial employment. The results of the West Indian census taken in 1946, when they can be analysed, will, it is hoped, throw further light on this subject.
