§ 76. Mr. Peter Freemanasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that mink skins are being imported into this country and being sold at £28 each; that it takes 80 to make one coat; and, as these have to be paid for in sterling, if he will take steps to prohibit these articles of luxury being imported, particularly in view of the cruelty involved.
316W
§ Mr. BelcherMy hon. Friend is probably referring to a recent import of mink skins of special colouring which was mentioned in the Press. Freedom to import raw fur skins was given in order to assist the re-establishment of the London International Fur Market, and this consignment of special mink skins is expected to prove a considerable attraction to foreign buyers. The mink skins in question were taken from farm-bred animals and no question of cruelty arises.
