HC Deb 15 December 1947 vol 445 c296W
Mr. Hollis

asked the Minister of Works whether the cost of £1,610 for aluminium houses includes the cost of architects' and and surveyors' fees; and what proportion these costs bear to the final cost of the houses.

Mr. Key

Yes. These fees would amount to less than 0.5 per cent, of the total cost.

Mr. Osborne

asked the Minister of Works, in view of the fact that the temporary aluminium house costing £1,610 exclusive of the land, road and service charges has a floor area of about 700 super feet only, whereas the permanent brick house provided by the private builder has a floor area of 1,000 super feet at a cost of £1,300 including the price of land, road and services, what is the reason for the disparity in price.

Mr. Key

The form of construction of the aluminium houses is entirely different from that of the brick house and it is impossible to make a detailed comparison of cost. A breakdown of the cost of the aluminium house will be given in the forthcoming White Paper in the Temporary Housing Programme.
