HC Deb 04 August 1947 vol 441 cc114-5W
82. Mr. D. Marshall

asked the Minister of Food what quantity of mackerel has been dumped in the North Sea during 1947; and if he will take steps to prevent, such waste of food in the future.

Dr. Summerskill

Up to 1st August, the quantity dumped was about 216 tons. I regret that, because mackerel landings are so small and so scattered, the scheme for the purchasing of herring surpluses for oil and meal cannot be extended generally to cover mackerel; but my right hon. Friend is considering whether, at the ports where arrangements for buying herring surpluses already exist, it would be practicable to buy mackerel also if factory capacity is available.
