HC Deb 03 April 1947 vol 435 cc350-1W
64 and 65. Mr. J. Morrison

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury (1) how many ex-Servicemen of the 2 1914–18 war were engaged as temporary civil servants during the course of the last war; and on what grounds the preference in retention given to such ex-Servicemen prior to 1939 has been continued for those recruited since 1939;

(2) how many temporary civil servants have received discharge notices; how many of these are ex-Servicemen of the last war; and how many are ex-Servicemen of the 1914–18 war.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

A pledge was given after the 1914–18 war that ex-Servicemen of that war should have preference in retention in temporary Government employment. The pledge, therefore, is of long standing and has never been discontinued. I regret that no information is available centrally on the other points in my hon. Friend's Questions.
