§ 106. Major McCallumasked the Secretary of State for Scotland why it is proposed to bring the Government Bracken Cutting Scheme C to an end after the 1947 season.
§ Mr. WestwoodThis scheme under which bracken is cut at subsidised rates by means of machines owned and operated by292W the Department of Agriculture for Scotland, was devised to meet the war situation. The results achieved are not commensurate with the cost involved and I am satisfied that further continuance of the scheme is not justified. It will accordingly be terminated on the conclusion of the 1947 cutting season. The scheme known as Scheme B, under which farmers and others receive a refund up to one half of the cost of bracken cutting done by their own or hired labour, will be continued.
