HC Deb 30 October 1946 vol 428 cc93-4W
59. Brigadier Mackeson

asked the Minister of Food what price was paid for barley purchased in Iraq during the past year, and how the starch and protein equivalent of the Iraq barley compares with average maize.

Mr. Strachey

The starch equivalent of Iraq barley is 71.5; that of average maize is 77.6. The average protein content of Iraq barley and maize are both approximately 10 per cent. Our buyers, who are all experienced business men, continue to advise me that they would be hampered in their work on behalf of the nation if we disclosed the terms of particular transactions. I shall continue to support them by refusing to make public this information.
