HC Deb 28 October 1946 vol 428 c53W
Mr. C. Smith

asked the Minister of Food how many bakers entitled to claim subsidy during each subsidy period in the last 12 months abstained from claiming subsidy or from claiming the full amount of subsidy; and what was the amount of subsidy unclaimed.

Mr. Strachey

The number is not known, but it is estimated that it fluctuates around 3,000; for the most part they are very small bakers engaged in other business apart from the production and sale of bread. Bakers who do not claim subsidy are not required to submit periodical returns of bread production, and the amount of subsidy unclaimed is, therefore, not known, but it is thought to be a comparatively insignificant amount.
