HC Deb 24 October 1946 vol 428 c21W
Mr. Parker

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the suitability of road works as a corrective to any fall in employment, he will decline to authorise the undertaking of such works at the present time, except where they are necessary, and enable labour and resources, so engaged, to be transferred to preparations for building work of all kinds.

Mr. Barnes

As I explained in my statement to the House on highway policy on 6th May last, the rate at which it will be possible to proceed with road works during the next few years will be determined by the availability of labour, materials and the requirements of the Government's employment policy.
