HC Deb 21 November 1946 vol 430 cc179-80W
160. Mr. Marples

asked the Minister of Works in view of the urgent appeals of his Department for economy in all types of fuel and the recent request for a 10 per cent. voluntary saving, what steps are being taken to see there is a similar saving in all Government Departments wherever situated, not only in electricity and gas but in coal, coke and similar fuel.

Mr. Tomlinson

In accordance with the Government's desire to encourage fuel economy, Government Departments have recently been asked to take immediate steps to review and strengthen their measures for preventing fuel waste. Fuel watchers will be appointed in all Government buildings to continue the work of the wartime fuel economy officers. These officers will record the consumption of all types of fuel in each building. If the 10 per cent. cut asked for by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Fuel and Power is not being achieved, my Department will at once consider what further measures can be taken. In addition, the Ministry of Works will continue the policy of improving the efficiency of fuel consuming apparatus wherever possible.
