§ 106. Mr. Willisasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what special steps are being taken to overcome the brick shortage which at present threatens the housing' programme in Scotland.
§ Mr. BuchananEverything possible is being done still further to expand production, which has been considerably increased in recent months. Among the special steps being taken is the provision 161W of financial help for the extension of plant, the introduction of a training soheme for key workers, and the improvement of general conditions of employment and of welfare arrangements. As a temporary measure arrangements have been made to obtain twenty million bricks from England for housing. It is of urgent importance that bricks should be used only on essential work where substitute materials cannot be obtained. The utmost economy in their use and the avoidance of waste is vital.
