HC Deb 21 March 1946 vol 420 c409W
84. Mr. Maclay

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General if he will consider making it a rule that telephone operators handling person to person cans will inform the person to whom the call is-addressed of the name of the caller and the exchange from which the call has been made, thus, in many cases, enabling valuable time to be saved in preparing to receive the call before the actual connection is made.

Mr. Burke

The name of the originating exchange is given in the case of personal calls; the name of the caller is also given if he has offered it, but the decision whether or not it should be given must rest with the person originating the call.
