HC Deb 04 June 1946 vol 423 c315W
Mr. Janner

asked the Minister of Transport in what countries the road accidents rate is less than in this country, having regard to the number of vehicles per mile of road; and whether he will arrange for a special study to be made of the circumstances in which such countries have been able to achieve a lower accident rate than Great Britain.

Mr. Barnes

Comparisons of road accident rates in different countries would be misleading. The total number of accidents which occur in any given period must be related to a variety of factors, such as the general speed of traffic, the density and type of traffic, and so on. My hon. Friend may like to know that we have a great deal of information about road accidents in other countries and this is constantly studied in relation to our own problem.
