§ Mr. Loganasked the Minister of Labour if he is aware that many places adjacent to Liverpool require workmen and cannot get them; that the I.C.I, at Northwich requires several hundred men but cannot billet them; that if men are transferred under the Essential Work Order 24s. 6d. per week is allowed to them; that men are unemployed because free transport to and from their work is not arranged; and if he will investigate the whole position.
§ Mr. IsaacsThe answer to the first and second parts of the question is "Yes, Sir." Workers from Liverpool are being placed in employment, among other places, at Ellesmere Port, Runcorn and Widnes, but the distance between Liverpool and Northwich, combined with the awkwardness of the journey, makes daily travelling for workers between these places impracticable. Arrangements for the payment of fares to workers recruited in the Liverpool area have been made by several firms in the places I have named. There is no connection as suggested by the hon. Member, between the Essential Work Order and the payment of lodging allowances.
