§ Mr. Bossomasked the Minister of Works how many workmen are now employed in brickworks; how many are needed to enable the works now open to operate at full capacity; and how many will be needed to operate all the brickworks in the country when they are all re-opened and working at full capacity.
§ Mr. Tomlinson:At the end of January approximately 20,000 workers were employed in brickworks. The labour force required to man these works fully is estimated at approximately 40,000. The labour force required to operate all brickworks in the country at maximum production is estimated at 60,000.
§ Mr. Bossomasked the Minister of Works how many brickworks are now producing finished bricks; what was their monthly output in January; and what is the total potential monthly output of all existing brickworks, including those now still closed, when operating at full capacity.
§ Mr. Tomlinson:In January 397 brickworks produced approximately 142 million finished bricks. The potential monthly output by all existing brickworks, including those now closed, operated at full capacity, is estimated at about 700 million.
