asked His Majesty's Government if they will state why all British subjects, under a regulation necessary in war, but intolerable in peace, are compelled on arrival at an hotel to fill up a lengthy form, instead of merely signing the hotel register; and whether they are prepared to withdraw forthwith this example of totalitarian prying into the movements of the citizens of the realm.

The regulation which the noble Lord has in mind was revoked by an Order in Council made on December 7, 1945 (S.R.O. 1945 No. 1535). A British subject staying at an hotel or similar premises need now only have his name, nationality and the date of his arrival entered in the hotel register.
