HC Deb 09 October 1945 vol 414 cc85-6W
Sir J. Mellor

asked the Minister of Food if he will explain the absence of salt from retail shops in many parts of England during September.

Sir B. Smith

The shortages of salt in certain retail shops during September were due partly to transport difficulties and partly to increased demands. Until quite recently the Service demands have been very heavy, and both the food trades and domestic users have been using increasing quantities. I have every reason, however, to hope that supplies of salt will be more freely available in the near future.
