HC Deb 12 November 1945 vol 415 cc1879-80W
Major Lloyd

asked the Minister of Health how the original estimate of the cost of the aluminium house at £600 compares with the estimate of the Aircraft Industries Research Organisation on Housing; and if he will explain the reasons for the difference between the original estimate and the current cost.

Mr. Tomlinson

I have been asked to reply. I have no knowledge of an estimate of £600, or of any estimate by the Aircraft Industries Research Organisation on Housing, for making and erecting the Aluminium House. The first official estimate was £914; the current estimate is £1,365.

The reasons for the difference are (1) Original underestimation of the cost of (a) the aluminium and timber contents of the house; (b) the fixtures and fittings in the house; (c) the plant and tools required to manufacture the house; (d) transportation from factory to site; (e) site preparation. (2) Changes in the specification which have been introduced to improve the original design. (3) Inclusion of allowances for contingencies and departmental expenses.
