HC Deb 12 June 1945 vol 411 c1480W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, as a token of gratitude to those who laid down their lives, he will exempt their widows' pensions from Income Tax.

Sir J. Anderson

I would remind the hon. Member that proposals for the grant of relief from tax in respect of war widows' pensions have been made on several occasions and have been considered and rejected in Finance Bill Debates. I am afraid I cannot agree with the hon. Member's suggestion that Parliament should alter its past decisions in this respect.

Major Peto

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what would be the estimated cost of making provision for any pension not exceeding £400 per annum to be deducted from the total amount of a person's income which is liable to Income Tax.

Mr. Peak e

I regret that the information for which my hon. Friend asks is not available.
