§ Mr. Edeasked the Prime Minister the total number of casualties sustained by men of the Royal Merchant Navy during the period of the European War; and how many of those who were at any time posted as missing or prisoner are still unaccounted for.
§ The Prime MinisterThe total number of casualties sustained by men of the Merchant Navy serving on British registered ships as reported from 3rd September, 1939, to 30th April, 1945, was 43,582. Of this total 30,589 were fatal casualties, 4,690 were reported missing, 4,215 wounded, and 4,088 interned. 5,994 of those reported missing or interned are still unaccounted for.
