HC Deb 20 February 1945 vol 408 cc637-8W
Mr. Tinker

asked the right hon. and gallant Member for Rye, as representing the Forestry Commissioners, what steps have been taken to clear up and make use of the broken timber left behind after many woodland sites have had the trees cut down, as much of the wood could be used to help to relieve the fuel shortage.

Major Lloyd George

I have been asked to reply. The fuel value of the waste wood left on felling sites must be considered in relation to the labour and transport required to deliver it in burnable sizes to consumers, and the present restricted transport facilities do not allow lengthy hauls into urban areas. My Department has, however, made special arrangements for the creation of emergency reserves of wood fuel by local authorities in those areas where surplus supplies of waste timber are available. In this way nearly 100,000 tons of waste wood have been collected, and in addition most coal and timber merchants are handling considerable quantities of logs for current distribution.
