HC Deb 14 December 1945 vol 417 c881W
Sir G. Fox

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will state the number and names of the prewar police training schools, indicating the capacity of each and those still open.

Mr. Ede

I assume the hon. Member has in mind police recruit training schools. It would involve unnecessary labour to obtain at this date a detailed list of the prewar recruit schools and of their capacity, but the general position was that about 42 forces in England and Wales maintained training schools for their own recruits and for recruits from other forces, providing an aggregate of about 2,200 places for students at any one time. Some of these schools are now being used for refresher courses, but arrangements are being made for the training of recruits for the county and borough forces in the immediate postwar period to be conducted in district training schools administered by the Home Office.
