HC Deb 23 September 1943 vol 392 cc445-6W
Mr. Lees-Jones

asked the Home Secretary whether he will consider the transference to a public hospital of pregnant women, who are undergoing sentence in prison for the period of their confinement, in order that the children may not be born with the stigma of prison birth attaching to them?

Mr. H. Morrison

This suggestion would involve legislation as there is at present no authority for the temporary release of a prisoner for her confinement except in cases in which it is not practicable to give proper care and treatment in prison. The question will be borne in mind when it is possible to prepare legislation on prison matters.
