HC Deb 23 September 1943 vol 392 cc428-9W
Mr. Riley

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware of the renewed demand in Jamaica for the establishment of a cement factory to help in meeting the bad housing conditions there?

Mr. Emrys-Evans

My right hon. Friend is aware of the interest in Jamaica in the establishment of a cement factory, and he agrees that in normal circumstances the proposal has much to commend it. As explained in previous answers, it is impracticable at present, owing to competing demands for materials such as steel and for fuel oil. As regards housing, the provision of cement only would be insufficient, since large supplies of lumber and other requisites, such as nails, would be necessary, and these are at present in very short supply.
