HC Deb 21 October 1943 vol 392 c1537W
Sir R. Gower

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether volunteers for mining, when they commence work at the pits, will be permitted to exercise their own discretion as to whether they do or do not become members of a trade union?

Major Lloyd George

No statutory obligation to be a member of a trade union is laid upon any coal miner in this country. Men volunteering for coalmining, however, are expected to conform to the conditions laid down in agreements made between employers and workmen in the various districts.
