asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport (1) what number of toll-gates there are in Glamorganshire; the tariff charges in each case; the number of persons employed; the number of hours worked in each week; the wages paid; and the names of owners of the toll-gates;

(2) what steps have been taken to remove the Penarth toll gate; what extra petrol is being used by tradesmen's vehicles between Cardiff and Penarth by travelling over Leckwith Hill, Glamorgan, instead of over the toll gate road; whether he will take immediate steps to make this road a free public road; and who owners are?

The only toll-gates in Glamorganshire are on the CardiffPenarth road which is jointly owned by Mountjoy, Ltd., and Plymouth Estates, Ltd.

The charges per day are as follow:

Horse and cart 4d.
Horse and trap 6d.
Lorry 2/-
Private car 1/-
3-wheeled combination. 6d.
Motor cycle 3d.

Vehicles plying for hire pay according to their class, but the payment permits of only one crossing. Military and other Service vehicles up to a gross weight of 15 tons are free. There are three collectors, two roadmen and a foreman, who is engaged part-time only. The chief collector works 60 hours, and the other men work 48 hours per week. The wages of the three collectors amount to £620, and those of the roadman (including the part-time wages of the foreman) amount to £416 per annum.
