HC Deb 10 November 1943 vol 393 c1171W
Major Nield

asked the President of the Board of Education whether, in view of the shortage of teachers, he will take steps, in conjunction with the other Departments concerned, to prevent the making of compulsory billeting orders in regard to the houses of married women teachers who may thereafter be required to cease teaching in order to look after persons billeted upon them?

Mr. Butler

Any occupier of premises who is aggrieved by the service of a billeting notice can appeal to a Billeting Tribunal set up under the Defence Regulations, and the Tribunal has power to cancel or to vary the billeting notice if it considers that the circumstances justify it. This machinery provides adequate protection against unreasonable billeting, and I see no grounds for suggesting that married women teachers should be considered on a different footing from other married women engaged in employment.
